Fence calculator for Australia: Colorbond and paling, with saved jobs
Free, no account, works offline once loaded. Enter the length of your fence and get posts, rails, sheets or palings, plinths and bags of post-hole concrete. Then save the job.
Estimates, not a quote. Counts are worked out from the length and sizes you type in. Measure the site, check the product sizes with your supplier, and add spares for cuts. Council, boundary and neighbour rules for your fence are yours to check.
Your fence
Palings: set the gap to 0 for butted palings. Gates are taken out of the run and add a post each. Each corner adds a post.

How the numbers work
- Posts: the run (length less gates) divided by the bay width, rounded up, plus one post, plus one per gate and one per corner. A straight 30 m run at 2.4 m is 13 bays and 14 posts, the same as What's The Damage's fence calculator (read 2026-11-06).
- Colorbond panel: the Lysaght Non-Cyclonic Design and Installation Guide (read 2026-11-06) gives a nominal panel width of 2350 mm for 3 infill sheets and 3100 mm for 4, standard infill sheet lengths of 1490, 1790 and 2090 mm, and standard post lengths of 2100, 2400, 2700 and 3000 mm. Suppliers differ, so the width is yours to change. Lysaght notes that specifications can vary by state: check with your supplier.
- Post length: footing depth less 40 mm plus the height above ground (Lysaght guide, section 6), rounded up to the next standard length. The guide lists footing depths of 100 to 900 mm by wind region and soil, with a 200 mm hole diameter; use the figure for your site.
- Palings: run length divided by paling width plus gap, rounded up, per layer. 40 m of 75 mm palings with a 15 mm gap is 445.
- Rails: our own estimate. Colorbond: 2 per bay up to 1.8 m high, 3 above. Paling: the rows you pick times the run divided by the rail length, rounded up. Check against your kit.
- Concrete: Post Set Concrete from Cement Australia comes in a 20 kg bag, mixed with 2.5 litres of water per bag (product page, read 2026-11-06). Two bags per post is a common allowance and not a manufacturer figure: set your own number from the bag label and your hole size.
